Life is a mystery—sometimes incredibly beautiful, at other times heartbreakingly sad...

A friend shared this video with me, and I thought it was wonderful... about how  ephemeral life is...
I’m sharing it with everyone else, too... along with a little anecdote from this morning involving another friend...

Have a blessed day, walking hand in hand with God. Our contract has been renewed: a new dawn, one more day—and yet, ironically, one day less...

This morning, keeping a promise I made to the husband of an old friend and former colleague— we met back in 1971, and she is gradually losing her mind to Alzheimer's—I called my friend Geri V.  (of Italian descent, born  in the USA)... a very cheerful and lovely person...

I decided to call her often after her husband, M. , told  me about the diagnosis... and to remind her of things she has forgotten, and to share a laugh just as we always used to...

She came to work in Miami in the same office as I was, when she was young, divorced, and raising her two sons by herself (one has since passed away as an adult); I was young and single, with a boyfriend studying medicine in Central America... I eventually married and lived there, in Costa Rica... until I returned to Miami and had three children (one daughter, who was ill since birth, passed away five years ago).

We have both laughed a great deal and shared so much, but we have also suffered—and each of us has lost a child... That’s life, isn't it? Yet, we have never lost our joy and enthusiasm for living... despite everything, and through a friendship that has remained steadfast over time.

Even though Geri doesn't remember many things anymore, she laughs along with me when I tell her stories. Every June 2nd—her birthday—I call her without fail at the home in "The Villages" near Ocala where she lives in retirement with her husband.  I would love to go see her, but it’s a long way, and I don't drive that far; it’s about a five-hour trip, and I would need to stay overnight.  I keep thinking that perhaps I might visit her someday if I go with someone else—and before she completely loses her mind and stops speaking... Only God knows. But I will keep calling her and making her laugh and remind her of our times together.

When  I call her, she laughs heartily with me, just as she always has; there is a connection between us that spans years.  M. her husband often tells me later how happy it makes him to see her laugh like never before whenever she speaks with me—because I make her eyes light up with joy, and she recognizes me as a friend: the "Cuban Chica" as she always called me, while I called her  the "Italian Chica" we go way back since  1971.

Life is a mystery. So, love one another, and share joy and memories.  As you can see, you don't have to die to lose them, for illness can steal away even our most cherished recollections.  I know this all too well, having lost my only sister—who was younger than me—to illness.

But I told Geri  this morning,

"Don't worry if you don't fully remember me, or if one day you see me as a stranger; in your heart and mine, we will always remember each other as the good, faithful friends we’ve been for half a century and more."...

And, half-laughing and half-moved to tears, she said to me on the phone...

"Don't you forget me Cuban Chica; keep calling me.  Even if my mind forgets you, I am sorry,  but I carry you in my heart always. I pray the Good Lord lets us see and hug each other soon—before I forget you completely because of this illness I have."

Never stop giving love and showing it to everyone in your life. A letter, a text, a call, a phrase, a smile,  or a single word can make a huge difference in the lives of the people we love.

For today is just another day, one more day, yet at the same time,
one day less.

Xio.
